Lighting Design Competition
- Mon, 02/16/2015
Visa Lighting challenged a group of industrial design students from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design to design an original light fixture intended for use in hospital corridors. The criteria consisted of:
- Primary source of light
- 1½” depth (or less)
- All components to be integral to the fixture
- Must be installed over an electrical j-box
- Must use the LED light engine provided by Visa Lighting
- Address visual comfort
- Easy to clean with minimal dust collection
Third Place in the competition went to Dan Mai. His research took him to a hospital where he interviewed people. Dan’s concept provided a calming effect on people through the symbol of an embrace and supplied good visual comfort. Taking second place was Michael Wolowski. His design was clean and simple and could be grouped together in a pattern to create visual interest. Michael demonstrated his model very well. And finally, first place went to Casey Maul. Her edgy but elegant design addressed all requirements and included a subtle way-finding element. Casey’s fixture model was very well-crafted and executed. We would also like to list our honorable mentions: Christine Carr, Krissy Weber, Lana Tamta, Randy Michael and Tiffany Do.
Thank you to all of the students who participated in our competition and to all of the professors for supporting this endeavor. We hope you will give us the pleasure of allowing us to do this again next year!
